WHEN BILL NUNNINK
poured a concrete slab to connect the Spanish-style house with the
garage and the skeleton of a new outdoor fireplace, he left a big blank canvas for his
wife, Jenny. Inspired by the colorful architecture of nearhy Old Town in San Diego,
Jenny says she just started drawing swirls w ith sidewalk chalk until she was satisfied
w ith the overall pattern. She used a grinder on the /2-inch-thick tiles to accomplish the
curves and—just for fun—threw in old gears, keys, and marbles here and there to jazz up
the design. “Very dirty, very noisy work,” Jenny says, “but this is the place to be now for
family parties and neighborhood happy hours.”
